OFFICIAL RECHAPADOS FERRER DISTRIBUTOR

Ferrer doesn't sell to the public: they work with distributors. I'm one of them, an official one.

Their workshop is in La Garriga (Barcelona), the same town I ship your order from. Almost every board I sell comes from there, and I build my chess sets with them, always with Staunton pieces.

I ship it myself: free to Spain, Portugal and the main EU countries, with 30 days to return it.

FERRER CHESS BOARDS

Standard or Deluxe is Ferrer's own naming: Deluxe boards use finer woods and have a wide border; Standard boards have a narrow one. The size that matters is the square (40, 45, 50 or 55 mm), and it decides the pieces: 40 mm, size 4; 45 mm, size 4 or 5; 50 mm, size 5 or 6; 55 mm, size 6.

FERRER CHESS PIECES

Always Staunton design, carved by hand: Standard pieces are inspired by the German Knight of 1950s Germany; Deluxe pieces, by the American Staunton. The size is the king's height (size 4, about 76-78 mm; size 5, 87-90 mm; size 6, 92-97 mm). All of them come with two extra queens, weighted bases, felt pads and a box.

HOW A FERRER BOARD IS MADE

Rechapados Ferrer craftsman holding a walnut veneer

1. THE VENEER

It all starts with thin sheets of fine wood: walnut, maple, sycamore or ash burl.

Each sheet has its own grain, which is why no two boards are the same.

2. THE SQUARES

Strips of light and dark wood are cut, alternated and cut again.

The 64 squares are matched by hand, one by one, on the light table.

3. THE BORDER

The frame and the border are fitted piece by piece, with a mallet.

Then the veneer is pressed onto the board.

4. THE VARNISH

It's spray-varnished in a booth.

The finish is matte: it brings out the colour of the wood and feels smooth to the touch.

THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT OFFICIAL CHESS BOARDS

When Netflix released the series, Ferrer found out from the trailer: their boards were in it.

The Queen's Gambit Set is the one from the Mexico City tournament (episode 4), where Beth Harmon faces Vasily Borgov for the first time.

The Queen's Gambit Deluxe Set is the one from the Moscow final (episode 7), the game where Beth beats him.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is it genuine Ferrer?

Yes. I'm an official distributor of Rechapados Ferrer, and every board comes from their workshop in La Garriga (Barcelona).

Can I buy directly from Ferrer or visit the workshop?

Ferrer is a workshop, not a shop: they don't sell to the public. That's why they work with distributors like me. I don't have a physical shop either: I only sell online and ship across the EU.

Which size should I choose?

The board's square decides, and the pieces are matched to it: 40 mm squares, size 4; 45 mm, size 4 or 5; 50 mm, size 5 or 6; 55 mm, size 6. Chess sets come already matched.

Can I personalise it?

Yes, with an engraved plate with a name and a date, added from the board or chess set page. It's the most requested option for gifts.

How long does shipping take and how much does it cost?

Spain and Portugal: 1-2 working days, free (in Spain, also to a pickup point). Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands: 4-5 days, free. Rest of the EU: from €10. I only ship within the EU.

What if I don't like it?

You have 30 days from delivery to return it, no questions asked. For orders placed in November and December, until 15 January.
